REVIEW: Bloodbath - Nightmare Made Flesh Century Media, 2004
8/10
Bloodbath - Nightmare Made Flesh - cover art There are few "all-star bands" who manage to deliver what is expected of them but Bloodbath were widely accepted as one of the most promising new names on the death metal scene as they released "Resurrection Through Carnage" in 2002. Since then they have parted ways with vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt as he had more than enough on his plate already with the steadily growing popularity of his own brainchild Opeth. In comes Peter Tägtgren (Hypocrisy, Pain) on vocals and Martin "Axe" Axenrot (Witchery, Satanic Slaughter) on drums as Dan Swanö becomes the second guitarist. The new line-up doesn't exactly mean a step down but "Nightmare Made Flesh" is not quite as impressive as its predecessor. Musically they still follow the American way more than the Swedish one but most of the songs are usually rather straight-forward and the growling vocals quite catchy and melodic. Peter Tägtgren is one of the finest death metal vocalists Sweden has to offer and he is making his mark the way he should on this album without copying his vocal style for Hypocrisy. If your death metal has to be ultra-technical then "Nightmare Made Flesh" is not for you but if you prefer a more well-balanced album with a groovy and brutal old-school vibe then don't forget to check it out.
