REVIEW: Bloodthorn - Under The Reign Of Terror Red Stream, 2001
7.5/10
Bloodthorn - Under The Reign Of Terror - cover art 5 Norwegians and their session synthesizer player make up this blackened death metal outfit. I hear a lot of old Incantation in them, as well as some In Aeternum, and maybe can compare some sections to Abominator. Apparently, Bloodthorn take their influences from both Old World black metal and death metal from the New World, which is a combination bound to produce something good. The booming production causes a nightmarish trepidation to loom from your speakers as "The Return Of Wrath" kicks in, annihilating everything in its way and spitting on the rubble with tasty leads provided by Alex. Krell has a pretty good range on the vocal end, and the synthesizers stick out on tracks like "After The Attack". A sci-fi / armageddon predominance in the lyrics and layout likely helped these guys land a deal with the mighty Red Stream Records, but their music can easily stand on its own on any roster, or in any CD collection. A Mayhem song, with the legendary Necrobutcher on session bass, closes this CD off in Norwegian style. Their musical consolidation should appeal to most fans of any form of extreme metal, with the exception of the technical aficianados, and I look forward to hearing more from these Trondheim residents. FAVORITE TRACKS: "Age Of Suffering", "Mass Destruction".
