REVIEW: Bloodthrone - Shield Of Hate (promo) Self-financed, 2003
7/10
Bloodthrone - Shield Of Hate (promo) - cover art Finally I get an American Black metal band That I can be proud to look at with my head held up high. At first I was very sceptical of Bloodthrone because they did what I thought was a dumb Management decision and released a 2 song promo cd. It was just a tease with one of their weaker songs. Ever heard of bands that have Lush keyboards? enchanting female vocals atmospheric sound scapes that take you away on a mountain top? and the beauty of the human spirit? You like that stuff?.....ummm..well...too bad because This band has none of that !! and that is fine because raw.ultra technical black metal is what they are about and a fine job they do at it. Sounding a little like old Dark Funeral what I like immediately about this was on the first track they came right out in your face. "Pagan Holocaust" just rips. very fast and hateful. (I like that) --- Vocals stand right out, the drumming is tremendously good(wow!). The bass is 50% non existent from a dude named "Evil Pope??.. oh geez! As for the guitars... They are played by the one called Captor.. and I hate this guy!! I hate him because he plays guitar so damn good and I cant!! Great guitar work I must say because it almost made me throw my guitar in the garbage.(AAAHH! the competition in me) Anyway each song does have that technical feel to them. Some of these bands I start to roll my eyes when they over complicate things just to be cool and show off? But In a way Bloodthrone doesn't come across as doing that. The songs will get boring eventually, but I think it will take a while. Like always There are a couple of klunker songs that are mediocre like shield of hate yet it still has a few cool parts in it. "Valley of the kings",Seven Daggers, and especially "At dusk she Burns" are my favs. At times I can hear not only fast and brutal stuff but they get a little melodic too (nothing wrong with that). The Curiosity factor Is there for me to hear more which may also get people to buy I only wish them luck as to how they will handle it on the managing part. Bloodthrone has gone through its share of line-ups as well ... Look on the bright side guys .. maybe it was a blessing. By the time this review is out they should already have this new cd available. get if you like the old (semi european) raw black metal. I liked it !!! but I didn't love it.
