REVIEW: Bloody Mary - Bloody Mary (demo) Self-financed, 2003
5.5/10
Bloody Mary - Bloody Mary (demo) - cover art The gothic rock / metal scene has virtually exploded the last few years with new bands being unveiled every week. The Italian Bloody Mary are one of those and came to life in the spring of 2000 when guitarist Alessandro Stranieri and bass player Marco Russo met in their home town of Milan. Now they have recorded their second self-titled demo. The six songs of this cd shows a band heavily influenced by bands like H.I.M. and The Fields Of The Nephilim but with a metallic edge. The vocalist Aldebran has a warm melancholic voice and he is doing his job rather well. The cd itself is quite enjoyable at times and fans of gothic rock will probably find at least some song to like here but the main problem I have with the disc is that the majority of the songs are rather typical and uninteresting mid-paced gothic rock. There are however a couple of tracks that stand out from the rest and by their strength alone I would recommend you to check this band out now or some time in the future if this is your cup of tea (or coffee if you don't like tea...). The two songs that stick when having listened to this demo is "Little Sister" with its metallic riffing and wonderful catchy chorus and "Cease To Burn" with the ultra-heavy guitars, sad melodies, somewhat distorted vocals and Aldebran trying to melt a few girls' hearts by using a deep Pete Steel way of singing. Except for those two very good songs there is not much of major interest but Bloody Mary is still a young band with the future ahead of them.
