REVIEW: Bombthreat - Breeding Ground of War self-released, 2007
7.5/10
Bombthreat - Breeding Ground of War - cover art At first listen, this hybrid of German death metal and German thrash – quite fortuitously from Germany – seems like a throwaway release, a model of genre respectability but inconsequentiality. Brutal as it should be, groovy when it has to be and growly at all times, but something that could come and go without ever remotely approaching the notion of being essential. But upon the second and third spins, something quite remarkable happens: it becomes quite memorable and lasting. Choruses, no matter how angrily growled, become catchy refrains. Guitar licks and solos assemble themselves into melodic hooks, to which one can return time and again. Some moments, such as “Time Doesn’t Heal,” “Glory of War” and “A Silent Night” become downright classic barnstormers. There are more than just those two, natch, but I’ll let the revelations come to the reader who decides to take me up on the offer to hear this little gem of an unsung release by a long-suffering collective. Not perfect by a longshot, and maybe tomorrow I’ll go back to writing it off as mediocre, but today and right now the Kreator and Morgoth fan in me is completely sold.
