The latest Bon Jovi album in stores! Just look up the commercials, and the interviews the band gave and so on... It is supposed to be the best thing they've done so far. Looking back on the Jovian history, they've managed to get out some serious recordings, so why not believe them? Even the self-entitled debut album manages to impress (as the ever popular "Runaway" comes to show). Then there was the disappointing "7800 Degrees Fahrenheit" (which ended up in the toilet eventually), but things all changed for the better when every single track from "Slippery When Wet" somehow propelled in the top of the tops. It was all solid ground from then on, right until Dave Bryan (keyboards) suffered a terrible injury at his hand and the band was forced to take a five year brake.
When news all around the world announced the return of the great band with a record called "Crush", everybody was just exstatic. "It's My Life" went into the tops spots, "Say It Isn't So" as well, and it was all in all a good album - as it was to be expected after a long break like that.
Then there came "Bounce", a weaker album, with very bad production and recording, and now "This Left Feels Right". I want to apologize for the long intro, but I think it is necessary in order to let people know how exactly I feel about this new material.
"This Left Feels Right" kinda feels like crap. I'm not sure what this can be blamed on - and I certainly don't know why the guys consider it good. Obie O' Bryan, the latest producer (and musical guru), led the band to a state where they can enjoy the freedom and confort of creating really bad quality music. All the 13 tracks included are really weak, badly produced, and not at all exciting nor interesting reproductions of all the biggest hits of the band (some way to make an impression!).
Is there a best song? Probably "Bad Medicine" would fit that description, but the fact that a kick-ass song like that turned out to be a ballad is not at all intrigueing. "Never Say Goodbye" is not at all bad, but that's only because it resembles the original very much.
Worst song is "Livin' On A Prayer", which is a duet of Jon's with the producer's wife - it sounds just awful. It is very clear that the woman sucks. I just can't seem to comprehend how this small fact got by the entire production team without notice (not even mentioning the label).
All songs are guitar-based (not too brilliant), thus totally ignoring the great keyboards that usually back the BJ songs up, and the latest add-on to the bands instrumentation is drum machines (not too bright ones I must add).
I don't even feel like discussing the bad design of the cover, and package. Let's just leave it all at the "music". If you used to like Bon Jovi (as I did), you're bound to find every single title that used to make you rewind just to be able to hear that one song again. Unfortunately, besides the titles themselves, there's nothing here for you. All in all: it's even bad for background.
