Boris' latest offering, Pink, opens (and closes) with an obvious nod to the massive wall of sound that My Bloody Valentine displayed so well seemingly so long ago. There's no way this thing is not an ode to MBV. After this morose and moody number expires halfway past the 7 minute mark, we are treated to a mash of Monster Magnet by way of Motorhead mixed with Mogwai and a touch of the Misfits. Seriously, this record is all over the place at once. The rest of this smoldering slab offers some of that catchy sound familiar to garage rock denizens of any band with a name of this type: "The _____s" -- and this sound often gives way to the vibe of the under-appreciated Fudge Tunnel. Some sonic abuse similar to Nirvana's ugliest moments is brought to the fore now and again and the production, whoa, that is a harsh and varied ride for sure. At some point the bottom falls out and yields the floor to a Type O Negative party for Earth with Black Sabbath in attendance. The trippiness of Argentina's bastard sons (Los) Natas drips throughout, though more uptempo, noisier, and perhaps a touch more aggressive. As a whole the album can be seen as varied, seemingly random, and a bit incongruous, but it is nonetheless killer. This power trio from Hell -- well, Japan, actually -- have made a record worth its weight in brown acid. Where Absolutego was a bit of a yawn fest, this thing is interesting from start to finish, never mind that it charades like the soundtrack to a blood red spaghetti western set in outer space -- made by David Lynch. Very interesting, gentlemen. Very interesting, indeed.
