REVIEW: Borknagar - Empiricism Century Media, 2001
8.5/10
Borknagar - Empiricism - cover art Borknagar is one of the most successful of the Norwegian black metal bands and even though the band was formed as late as 1996 they have now released no less than five full-length albums. This indicates that they are a very professional and hard working group of people which stands even more clear after listening to one of their albums. "Empiricism" is the first album featuring the new Swedish vocalist Vintersorg (Andreas Hedlund) who is previously well known to most metal fans for his wonderful work with Otyg, Havayoth and Vintersorg. You may have feared that the departure of Simen to Dimmu Borgir would endanger the Borknagar spirit but Vintersorg is doing the job very well too. "Empiricism" is more complex and even than the last album and even though there are no real stand-out tracks like there was on "Quintessence" the two opening tracks are perhaps slightly better than the following eight ones. The pace is also a little slower with more of an orchestral feeling. The focus has been somewhat taken from speed towards melody which I think suites the voice of Vintersorg a lot better. This time Borknagar chose to record the album in Norway together with Borge Finstad, resulting in experimentation with a hammond organ, grand piano and authentic strings. A new era has begun for Borknagar and it will be interesting to hear what musical landscapes we are to be delivered in the future from these Norwegians.
