REVIEW: Borknagar - Quintessence Century Media, 2000
9/10
Borknagar - Quintessence - cover art The Norwegians of Borknagar have developed a lot since their early days and this is in fact the quintessence of progressive black metal. With Lars A. Nedland (formerly of Solefald) in the band we can also be sure of some folk music touches which actually fits into the Borknagar sound very nicely. Don't worry, this is not folk metal but there are still traces of it in the synth layers. Nedland has also been honored with an instrumental keyboard sound which he has written all by himself ("Inner Landscape"). It sounds ok but nothing more although it seems to work fine as a bridge or pause between the first and second halves of the album. The third and fourth tracks of the album are some of the best black metal songs ever made and this is a lot thanks to the wonderful semi-operatic vocals from I.C.S. Vortex who unfortunately has left the band for Dimmu Borgir since then. It is still an enigma why the band didn't use his vocals a lot more than they did because they are simply amazing at their best. Still, Brun is a very talented composer and this album is without a doubt the best Borknagar has produced so far.
