REVIEW: Born From Pain - In Love With The End Black Market Activities, 2005
8/10
Born From Pain - In Love With The End - cover art OK, Born From Pain is seriously becoming a guilty pleasure. I would label it metalcore but that has a terribly negative connotation right now, and I'd hate for people to keep this band out of their eye just because of whatever genre I label it as. At heart it is tough-guy hardcore which is a legitimate genre, but I'm not sure if everyone knows that. A friend of mine introduced me to a band called 100 Demons which has essentially the same feel. I think they like to just go around and beat the shit out of each other and start bar brawls and stuff. This music is extremely aggressive and in-your-face, and there really is no let-up from start to finish. Admittedly, it's extremely formulaic, and once you've heard one or two songs you know what to expect from the whole album... and all the other albums the band has and will release. This album doesn't catch my attention as much as the last one "Sands of Time" did, but it's still a kick-ass record! For some reason, I really think this band has it's shit together. There is nothing amazing about the musicianship or songwriting, nothing noticeable about their style (very very tried and true), but they've really hit the nail on the head and produced another album that is exactly what all tough-guy hardcore bands try to accomplish.

Why can't I get enough of this band? Because they are simply good shit. The extreme anger and primitive aggression are relentless and empowering. You WILL get pumped up while listening to this music. Do you go to the gym? Just listen to this shit when you go and I guarentee you'll be lifting an extra 10 lbs immediately. Now, I fully realize that there are other bands that are able to accomplish this, and are able to make this irritating genre of music work, but I haven't heard any that I genuinely enjoy, let alone enjoy as much as I do Born From Pain. As I've said, this album is not as notable as the previous one, but it's still the same stuff, and it's still as angry as ever. "Rise or Die" is the perfect track to open the album, with the slightest bit of buildup in the intro (all of 10 seconds more or less) and once it breaks it'll never go back. Don't expect this one to slow down in the middle or to hit a melodic section that monopolizes the middle or end of the album. It's a short record, as you can see from the 34 minute length, and it does go by quickly. I wish it lasted a little longer, but I think if it did I might have started to get irritated by it's underlying monotony. I'm normally really picky about the need for innovation and admittedly I'm usually unfairly harsh when a band fails to exhibit impressive musicianship and/or songwriting. However, I'm somehow able to ignore this when I'm listening to Born From Pain and just headbang straight through.

"The New Hate" and "Fear the World" are my favorites other than the aforementioned intro "Rise or Die." I have no idea what other people's reactions are to this CD, and if you want to bitch me out for praising this somewhat simple album so highly, feel free. But I can't help but give this album AT LEAST an 8 because it fucking rocks. Get it, get pumped, and destroy whatever you can find in the immediate vicinity.
