So this record came a little while ago from Black Market Activities, a relatively new off-shoot from Metal Blade Records, and knowing that they're primarily a hardcore label, I wasn't really sure what to expect from this album. My uncertainty was only reinforced by the fact that I'd never heard of the band anyway. So I've listened to it for a long time now (over vacation and all) and the delayed verdict is in. Kick ass. I really do like this album despite its somewhat blatant lack of originality. I do realize that this album has very little to offer in the realm of innovation, but I still have grown attached to it regardless. Songs like "Under These Skies" and "Black Gold," and... well... pretty much all of them keep me headbanging and singing along for hours.
The rhythms are irresistible and crushing and the guitar work while somewhat bland is powerful no less. I have to say straight up that I'm suprised. One of my biggest beefs with albums is usually that they're not original enough, but I think that that's because most unoriginal albums fail to raise the bar in any way shape or form. I should mention that I usually don't like much if any hardcore or metalcore. That should give you readers an idea of how highly I'm praising this album. I really do believe... no... I know that it will destroy your stereo, and that you'll be glued to it for weeks. It hasn't moved from my car stereo for over 2 weeks, that's almost some sort of record or something! For long time fans of the band, I can't rightly say if you'll like this or not, because I've never heard any of their earlier material. But the skill that they execute this style of music with, leads me to believe that they've been working on it for a while, so its probably similar to what they've released in the past. Unoriginality and all, Sands of Time is a killer record and metalheads and hardcore kids alike should definitely check it out. I was going to omit the following lame line, but I can't help myself. I guarentee you'll be chanting "Curse the Black Gold!" by the end of your first listen! Go buy it!
