REVIEW: Brain Drill - Apocalyptic Feasting Metal Blade Records, 2008
8.5/10
Brain Drill - Apocalyptic Feasting - cover art Brain Drill performs a brand of death metal/grindcore which is merciless in its precision and borders on the absurdly fast and technical. Within the first 20 seconds of their debut album, Apocalyptic Feasting, you will know exactly what to expect for the next 35 min, namely furious arpeggios, blast beats, screaming/growling, and (surprisingly audible) technical bass lines. Indeed, Brain drill up the ante of sheer speed and brutality in their genre due to the astonishing technical virtuosity displayed by the entire band. Indeed, none of the members fail to impress and each contributes his own bit of musical expertise. This is refreshing considering most “brutal” bands ostensibly ride on the laurels of their guitarist(s) and drummer while paying little attention to vocals and often less to the bass. The vocalist is more impressive than expected and manages to avoid the pitfall of infuriatingly monotone growling which is so characteristic of death metal by employing a wide range of extreme vocal techniques. The bassist also contributes greatly to the album with his uniquely swift and complex bass lines which lend support to the blindingly complicated guitar work. All of this is further supplemented by the drummer’s atrociously fast blast beats, though luckily he also has enough skill to mix up his technique and keep it interesting, nothing is worse on an album than having 40 min. worth of super fast static parading as drumming. Also of note is the impeccable production on this CD, the sound on Apocalyptic Feasting could have easily become fuzzy or indiscernible given the speed at which the band is playing. Instead all of the instruments are able to be heard with crystal clarity making for a very enjoyable listen. In fact the only gripe that I have with this album is minor, namely it is the overall breakneck pace at which it speeds along. While this is exciting for the first 5 or 6 songs by the end of the album you are a bit over stimulated and the tracks can start to become a bit tedious. However this is a danger for any band of the genre and detracts little from the overall quality of Apocalyptic Feasting. Brain Drill is certainly a band to keep an eye on in the future and I am hopeful that with more time and experience their sound will mature and become even more superior. I highly recommend this for any fan of brutal death metal or grindcore, it is worth many listens.
