REVIEW: Braindamage - War Against The Almighty Together As One Records, 2005
7/10
Braindamage - War Against The Almighty - cover art Here we go again. Italian hardcore/thrash with growling. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it. But maybe a band like Braindamage could help me. They play a harsh kind of metal and really deliveres a mood of aggression that the album title states.
And the big plus: As long as singer Andre keeps growling you don’t hear that Italian accentuated English we are so not fond of. Actually, Braindamage doesn’t sound Italian at all. Ones’ first guess would probably be America and for this kind of music that would probably only be a compliment. Braindamage have been playing together since the 80’s and became quite big as a demo band. In 1992 they released their first CD, “Signal De Revolta” and the new one, “War Against The Almighty”, makes their fourth. The bands’ theme is “very critic, anti-dogmatic and fistrising against God and religion, NOT satanistic, just trying to develop a neohumanistic view of life”. And after I’ve skimmed through the lyrics I see some of that. But also stuff that I can’t make out at all. Well, well. I’m sure it’s critic in it’s own way.

There is a lot of groove on this disc, much thanks to the outstanding rhythm section but also because of the heavy guitar sound. Overall, the sound is great. It is heavy when ought to and very atmospheric in some of the slower passages with floating tunes hovering through the melodies. Or something like that. I think it’s great anyway. Less good though is the chaotic doubling vocals with the female voice and when the guitars sounds too American. Stay with the melodic harmonies guys!
