This is the first time I've reviewed a promo CD containing voiceovers in the songs, and I hope it's the last one. It's disgusting to pay attention to an album that every now and then is being interrupted by an answering-machine like female voice saying which album and song we are listening to (maybe we're jerks unable to read the songtitles), and of course when and who will release it. Congratulations, Metal Blade: you've avoided a bunch of internet piracy this way. And in the meantime you've fucked up several listenings from honest reviewers such as yours truly. Have you thought about cutting off the last minute of each song? It makes the same sense and it's not so annoying.... Only two out of the ten tracks of Downburst are complete and untouched, so figure out the sensations of listening to songs with two or three voiceovers.... In addition, I usually listen to albums four or five times before writing the review, so it's been strife, my task with this album....
Going to the music, Brainstorm is a powerful metal band with solid musicianship and good ideas. Nothing original, sure, but in a certain way they seem to have found a niche of their own and feel quite comfy playing this style. Here you won't find lame choruses nor cheesy stuff. Uh, no easy fast guitar solos, classic cavalcades and so on. Luckily not every heavy metal band licks Yngwie or Helloween asses. Iced Earth, Savatage or Queensrÿche (in the vocals) are references to this band. Anyway, they are stronger than Savatage in the heavy parts. The perfect sound remarks thrashy guitars, the rocky rhythm section and the sometimes splendid harmonies. Flawless execution by a veteran band that knows what to do and how to rock, without a doubt!
