REVIEW: Brave - Waist Deep In Dark Waters (EP) Self-financed, 2001
7.5/10
Brave - Waist Deep In Dark Waters (EP) - cover art In 1999 the American dark progrock band Arise From Thorns released their first full-length album called "Before An Audience Of Stars" on the Dark Symphonies label. Now they are back with a new MCD, a new name braver than the previous one (pardon my terrible sense of humor) but with the same musical brand as before. Things haven´t really changed that much but since there were never much wrong with their music I am not disappointed with their new material. They still rely a lot on the beautiful and serene vocals from Michelle Loose but her bandmates are doing their job pretty well in order to create the perfect soundscape needed to let her voice drift towards the skies without any kind of hindrance. I have a feeling that she could do so much more with her voice than what shows on this MCD and it´s only on "Lost" where the true capacity of her oral work reveals itself fully. Just like all other bands on Dark Symphonies (they are not that many but still...) the music from Brave lets you wander through all human emotions within 20 minutes and you will stay charmed from the touching sound until the final track ends. Then you will be left alone in an uplifting state of contentment that will help you through another day (or night...). The vocal melodies are a little weaker than on their debut album in my opinion but still they are among the better bands in their genre of dark progrock. Let us all hope for an even stronger second full-length album from the brave ones.
