REVIEW: Burning a Marvelous Life - Nonbeliever self-released, 2008
6.5/10
Burning a Marvelous Life - Nonbeliever - cover art The fact that this five-song EP clocks in at a whopping nine and a half minutes ensures that it will take me longer to write the review than play the frickin’ thing, but oh well, let’s deal with the music on hand. Lotsa grind, lotsa death and a smidgen of hardcore groove all converge into a loose, angular good time. In the span of 1:06 and 1:38, respectively, “I Thought I Buried You” and “Show Me Your Savior” display full-on grindcore and death metal joie de vivre, with five or six tempo stop-starts between the two songs. “A New Perception” and “Elegance of a Pristine Woman,” meanwhile, enlist a combination of circle pit stealth, spiraling bass lines and Slayer-derived sour riffs to indicate that this band might well succeed if it decides to go epic someday and write songs longer than, oh, three minutes or so. Fine production for deathgrind, with a lovely and punitive mix to boot, with maybe a bit too much trashcan acoustics on the snare, but such minor quibbling is about it. More, fellas!
