REVIEW: Burnt By The Sun - The Perfect Is The Enemy Of The Good Relapse Records, 2003
7/10
Burnt By The Sun - The Perfect Is The Enemy Of The Good - cover art Perfection is often associated with some kind of regularity and order. Order or, more specifically, unorder is defined through the concept of entropy. The less ordered a system is the higher its entropy. The general rule is that all processes that lead to a higher state of unorder, thus higher entropy, are spontaneous, such as the evaporation of water when hanging clothes out to dry. If a process that leads to lower entropy is to take place an input of energy is necessary. The concept of entropy is often of high relevance in chemical reactions but it can also be applied to more macroscopic phenomena. If we look upon our atmosphere, the creation of such a structure is a process where the overall entropy is lowered, meaning that energy must be added in order to make it possible. This energy comes from the gravity force field of Mother Earth herself. If you define an increase of entropy as good and an decrease of entropy as evil then Burnt By The Sun may be right in their album title "The Perfect Is The Enemy Of Good". Of course everyone strives for perfection and order as that is what we humans generally appreciate. It looks good, it sounds good, it is the way we are programmed to function. The problem is that there are so many more ways to achieve imperfection than perfection. That is also the reason why entropy always increases on a large time scale. The change of entropy is a statistical process and so would making music be if you had no idea what you were doing and just placed one random riff next to another. Fortunately that is not the way Burnt Of The Sun have composed their songs for their brand new album. No matter what they want to say with their album title they are kind of speaking against themselves. Whether you want to admit it or not you are always striving for perfection. We all have different priorities in life and some try harder than others but in one way or another perfection is what we want. As you may have realized by now I have avoided saying a single word about the music on this piece of plastic. I was now thinking of explaining how a cd player works. No, just kidding... The reason I have avoided it for so long is that it is very difficult to say anything at all about Burnt By The Sun. Just like most of the younger generation of bands on the Relapse label they have their musical roots well set in the noisier side of heavy music - hardcore, mid-paced grind etc. - but they also add more modern influences from various genres. Fusion metalcore might be the best label to put on their music but they are not a metalcore band in the meaning that they sound like the new bands on Century Media or Metal Blade. This is less accessible and more dynamic. The song writing is not what I would call amazing as several songs sound pretty much the same but they have some interesting vibes going on. The vocalist is doing a good job too. Overall a decent album from a band who fit well in the Relapse family. If you like the label you know what you get and Burnt By The Sun do it well but their album doesn't really bring us any surprises for Christmas. Something unexpected did happen in the beginning of track number eleven "Spinner Dunn" though with its oriental Hollenthon rhythms. Intense, chaotic, groovy, technical, heavy and ferocious metalcore.
