REVIEW: Burst - Prey On Life Relapse Records, 2003
9/10
Burst - Prey On Life - cover art "BURST deliver unquestionably brilliant music that consumes and digests the listener with grand and hypnotic waves of sound." -relapse.com-

Burst is an band that very few know about but after this record there should be more of them. After a nearly decade long career Burst have found the ingredients for an quite unigue and great record. Mixing up Neurosis type riffs and atmospherics, wide ambient sounds and Hardcore aesthetic. The first actual song is "Iris", a perfect opener that in some distant way brings In Flames in mind, good opener. "Sculpt the lives" follows up and is the fastest song on the record but no more straighter than any other song on the record and has some nice vocal work. It's track number four called "Rain" that makes me think about a hardcore version of Opeth, a song from the more mellower and melodic side. The soundscape has a lot of room in it and some echoes of OceanMachine can probably be heard... The album is nicely put together with good production and has a nice flow in it which makes it quite easy to listen to and has more to offer than one would guess on the first listen. There are fresh ideas and a bit of experimenting in here. On stage however it could be a whole different experience 'cos the album works as a headpounder too. So if Burst is playing around your neighbourhood go check them out.
