REVIEW: Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss Misanthropy Records, 1994
8.5/10
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss - cover art Misanthropic, cold, harsh, dark and epic are some of the words suitable when you want to describe the music on this album. Burzum is of course a living legend in the black metal community and it is easy to let yourself be fooled that he has gained his fame only by his moronic actions. He was a pioneer in the extreme music scene and his music is simply amazing. "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss" is kind of like a bridge between the older more raw and primal Burzum records and the newer keyboard based ambient ones. While this one is still a black metal release you can feel the ambient presence occupying more space in the soundscape than it did before. The album is also rounded off with "Tomhet", a very long, beautiful and completely instrumental ambient track. The music of Burzum is built upon simple basic rhythms, harsh distorted sounds, ambiance and anguished screams. It is not complex at all but somehow he makes all elements come together in a very unique way to create an atmosphere that very few bands have been able to do ever since. Musical genious and intelligence do apparently always not accompany each other but Burzum will definitely always be remembered as one of the best black metal bands of the first generation.
