Strange name for a band, isn´t it? Well, from that detail one could expect a bizarre metal band in the vein of Solefald, Carnival in Coal or similars. However, Butterfly Temple play in a different league. The music performed by these guys is hard to describe, if I had to name some bands I recall while listening to Butterfly Temple, I´d quote Skyforger, Moonsorrow, Bathory. Hmmm, maybe Finntroll or Children of Bodom, too... you got the point, I think. No band in particular but quite a few, so Butterfly Temple means VARIETY above the rest of things. Here you can find keyboards even with some loose hints to 70´s dinosaurs like Emerson Lake & Palmer, female vocals, flutes, violins, etc. and in the whole album can be noted the huge influence of classical Russian composers and folk music. The base of the songs is heavy metal with huge loads of melodies that tread the medieval ground constantly. Take for example the ninth song that is minstrel-esque as hell, certainly! Some call this viking metal, but I wouldn´t include Butterfly Temple in that category since I´m not very convinced, really. Anyway there´s a strong pagan element in the music. I can´t say nothing at all about the lyrics because they´re in Russian and they haven´t translated the words, so I don´t understand them. Despite of that, the layout and the booklet is great with plenty of pages and pictures. The production also deserves a mention, powerful and consistent. This is an interesting band that maybe deserves a listen if you want something apart from cliches and cheap clones running around...
