REVIEW: Byla - Byla Translation Loss Records, 2005
7.5/10
Byla - Byla - cover art Christian McKenna and the crew at Translation Loss Records are back with another diamond in the rough. This time we have an instrumental side project from 66.6% of Dysrhythmia -- Kevin Hufnagel and Colin Marston (the latter also of Behold… the Arctopus and Infidel?/Castro!). You're probably thinking Byla play something other than what is presented here, though, especially if you know anything about, of, or from these two men's other bands. So let me say no, instead of some raging Jazz Metal on steroids and methamphetamines Byla play a sort of acid-flashback induced trippiness wrapped in an original brand of ambient music. Oh, some almost prototypical electronic ambient creeps in as does feedback-laden guitar droning, but the bulk of this effort is sparsely arranged acoustic guitar with additional textures courtesy of any number of instruments (and maybe even samples). This is an interesting listen that can be challenging due to the quiet of many of the plainly textural passages, but the guitar-heavy tracks, which are distinctly not heavy and certainly not Metal, are excellent. Check this out if you want to experiment or need some bedtime (or quiet time) aural pleasure.
