REVIEW: Byron Nemeth Group - 100 Worlds Self-financed, 2004
7/10
Byron Nemeth Group - 100 Worlds - cover art Byron Nemeth grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, from the age of 12 with a Hungarian father and a mother from Quito, Ecuador, a city where he had spent his first twelve years on this Earth. After having played in some local bands in his youth he formed his own studio called Pacifica Studios in 1997 and began his career as a solo artist. He is a very professional and hard working man it seems and this is the first time a musician has sent me a book close to 400 pages thick to go with the promo material! The book is called "Working Musicians" and was written by Bruce Pollock. It features a lot of musicians, everyone from Lita Ford and Gene Simmons to Max Cavalera and, guess what, Byron Nemeth. "100 Worlds" is the second album from this American multi-instrumentalist and producer and it was recorded at his own studio with mastering handled in London by Nick Webb who has worked with internationally successful artists such as Queen, Iron Maiden and Kraftwerk. First of all I should make this clear that this is not entirely a solo album as a few other musicians have helped Nemeth in writing the songs presented. It is very hard to categorize the music found here. Basically it is instrumental and progressive rock music with strong influences from both jazz music (which Byron has studied before) and classical music. Especially the song "Russian Winter" is heavily influenced by classical music and features both acoustic and electric violins played by Joe Deninzon. "100 Wounds" is above all suited for music lovers who appreciate skilled musicians showing off their skills but it is definitely melodic and heavy enough to be enjoyed by metal fans as well. I like the fact that it's instrumental because adding vocals would probably have ruined much of the experience. I personally would have preferred the album to be slightly heavier but it is nonetheless very well done. Stand-out tracks: "Lightning's Touch", "Russian Winter", "Tsunami Sea".
