This is in fact one of the albums of 2004 that I have looked forward to the most. After having been a big fan of Opera IX from the very beginning I was very disappointed when I heard that their female vocalist Cadaveria had left the band. The result was devastating for Opera IX as could be heard on their first (and only so far) album without their front woman. However, Cadaveria began a new career on her own together with the drummer Flegias (who left Opera IX with her) and several other skilled Italian musicians. When the debut album "The Shadows' Madame" was released in 2002 it seemed as if she was more or less essential for the success of Opera IX. I still hope that they will rise to their former beauty once again but for now, let's concentrate on the second Cadaveria album. The debut album was more accessible than anything Opera IX ever did with more straight-forward metal riffing and "Far Away From Conformity" continues further in the direction of technical death / thrash metal. It is musically more advanced, varied and challenging than its predecessor but unfortunately Cadaveria experiments a little bit too much with her vocals from time to time. She still has that unique style of singing and a more powerful growl than most male extreme metal vocalists but also a highly efficient clean voice. She is just finding it hard to put her voice to the fullest use this time but she is still doing a great job with the prime example of her expertise being "The Divine Rapture" which is definitely the highlight of the album. Something highly unusual for an extreme metal band (or a metal band in general for that matter) is doing a cover of Blondie's classic "Call Me" but Cadaveria manages to pulll it off nicely. "Far Away From Conformity" is not quite as strong as the debut but the title was very well chosen as this is definitely not a band like any other.
