REVIEW: Cage - Darker Than Black Massacre Records, 2003
8/10
Cage - Darker Than Black - cover art To an evergrowing league of quality American heavy / power metal bands we can now add Cage. Although I am not very happy with the way Massacre Records treat press (read me) they are still able to find new interesting acts. No need to mention, Cage is one of them and even though this San Diego based band have been around for more than a decade this is my first encounter with them. "Darker Than Black" is an exciting, fresh and entertaining album even if there is nothing new or groundbreaking about it. Inspired by bands like Judas Priest and Halford in particular they have composed an album worth of music that never grows boring. The album is very coherent with an overall very high quality and no tracks that really stick out from the rest. Cover art by Marc Sasso and a professional production by Richard Carr at Silverclous Studio does not make this any worse. This is one of the most interesting new American heavy metal bands at the moment and Cage is fronted by one of the finest vocalists I have heard in a long time. His voice is close to perfect - it has depth, power and strength. This is an album that I would recommend to fans of bands like Jag Panzer, Judas Priest, Halford, Iced Earth and Jacob's Dream.
