REVIEW: Calico System - They Live Alveran Records, 2005
4/10
Calico System - They Live - cover art The St. Louis quintet Calico System’s album “They Live” was released in late 2005. Blending aggressive hardcore with emo, this band has chosen a path that a large number of bands already have explored. Pounding guitars mixed with screamo vocals and an occasional clean chorus, it is hard to find anything original in Calico System’s music. But it is not the lack of innovation that is the worst part with this album, it’s that it is so boring. I could have loved this album if the songs were any good, but as it is I find it uninteresting. The singer, Mark Owens, does once in a while deliver some good hardcore vocals that almost makes you believe in the band, but then it all falls down again. Calico System is in no way a terrible band, but it is grey and tiresome. On record the music doesn’t break through, perhaps it is better on stage (after a lot of beers). Calico System need to work on their song writing and create something with a little bit of a hook to it and also strive for a character of their own.
