Now here's a band that mixes techno samples with distortion in a way that actually fits, thus creating something rather interesting and rather good. This British band has managed to acquire a stabile fan base, and has caught the attention of many big names in the music industry in spite of its rather short career in music (they've only been around since 2000). Metalcore influenced guitars, screaming vocals and all kinds of turn-table effects and other modern sounds blended together form the base of the Calm Insanity music. Songs are very well written, aggressive vocals fit quite well into the atmosphere created by the constant scratches, looping, and thick toned guitars. Overall sound is not totally original though: there are tons of ideas borrowed from other bands playing this same style. The sound is not at all British for that matter - it's 100% American. If I wouldn't have been informed of its origin I would've been certain that I'm dealing with a rising band of the US underground (didn't try to actually grade the band because of this - it would be nice to create something more European... for my taste... ). I would really be interested in hearing these guys play live, because these songs just don't feel like they were created for stage (although it is possible to make a good show with them - I just don't know how many bands could actually pull it off).
Dynamics of the songs kind of had to suffer because of the implementation of techno effects, but they do make the creations more interesting, and from the many bands I've heard trying to do this, Calm Insanity is one of the few who actually managed to succeed. A friend of mine was over at my place just the other day (when I first listened to the record) and he ironically made the observation that CI sounds like a mix of all the American Grind / Rap / Metalcore bands on one album. Although this isn't really true, his thoughts do have a certain degree of truth in them. Calm Insanity does bring a small amount of change to modern metal, but it is mainly very "conservatory" (if I can use this word in association with modern metal). I don't think there's really any more that I could say about this album, because there's really not very much to talk about. It is just good music created by a talented band, and it's all that you could ever expect from a techno and metal blend. I liked it.
