REVIEW: Camulos - Der Untermensch (Mit Namen Christ) Christhunt Productions, 2003
6/10
Camulos - Der Untermensch (Mit Namen Christ) - cover art Camulos is a project made up of two men calling themselves Zorrn (drums) and Nazgul (vocals, guitars, bass). Hailing from Germany they have also decided that the German language should be used in their lyrics which, in combination with their black metal based music, will not help them get a good reputation in the metal scene. Somehow I don't think that a good reputation is what the band is looking for considering their song titles and reference to the controversial but still respected German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Musically Camulos perform a mixture of black and death metal with a high density of melodies. Camulos was a celtic war god and since their label supports war, hate and violence I guess they have come to the right place. Band references like Darkthrone, Sacramentum, Dark Funeral and Thyrfing come up while listening to this album but still they don't sound like any of them. The first couple of songs are quite nice but overall the music is a little bit too basic and generic to fully appeal to me. The guys are decent musicians and the production is very good for an underground label but that is not enough these days to make it to the top of the iceberg. My favorite war hymn would probably be "Der Krieg Beginnt" which reminds me a lot of Marduk.
