REVIEW: Candlemass - Ancient Dreams Active Records, 1988
8/10
Candlemass - Ancient Dreams - cover art Here we go with an older release from one of the most impressive doom metal bands, hailing from Sweden: Candlemass, under guidance of genious Leif Edling and with mighty opera trained Messiah Marcolin on the microphone, released with Ancient Dreams an album that was not to be loved by all Candlemass fans. Nevertheless I strongly believe this is an underrated album. The songs are slow to midtempo, clad in a dark, doomy atmosphere presenting catchy melodies and, above all, enthrones the remarkable voice of Messiah Marcolin, who has his highlights especially in the slower parts of songs like "Darkness in paradise", "Incarnation of evil" and "Bearer of pain". Although being heavy, some songs seem to suffer from any kind of thin guitars. "Black Sabbath Medley" is a song that is not really worthy of being called a Candlemass song. Let us throw this song into the abyss of oblivion. "Epistle No 81" is a pure masterpiece. It is not only doom, it is something I would call “Candlemass-grave-doom”. Being very depressive, the song creates an intense atmosphere of eternal grief, death and deepest sadness. The lyrics of this song underlines the feeling of profound despair. As far as I know, "Epistle No. 81" shall be based upon a Swedish folk song, but I can´t verify this (if so, I would die to hear the original version). Although "Ancient dreams" doesn´t reach the quality of "Nightfall" or "Tales of creation", it is great doom as it should be. Buy it!

[Editor's comment: "Epistle No. 81" was originally written by the famous Swedish song writer and poet Carl Michael Bellman (1740-1795).}
