REVIEW: Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus Black Dragon Records, 1986
9.5/10
Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus - cover art 1986 was one of the best years in the history of metal - Metallica released their "Master Of Puppets" album and Slayer released "Reign In Blood", two of the most successful metal albums ever released. What many younger metal fans don't know is that this was also the year that a whole new subgenre of metal was brought to life through this close to legendary album. "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus" is perhaps not the most intelligent album title you could come up with but what matters is the wonderful music Leif Edling and his Candlemass created. Candlemass was formed in 1985 after the demise of his old band Nemesis and as you can see it didn't take long before they ended up with a record deal. This album was released before the charismatic front man Messiah Marcolin entered the band but even though I think his voice is wonderful and enhances the coming albums I don't seem to miss it very much on this album. The music we are talking about is powerful doom metal, not the ultra-slow Skepticism style, not the gothic Tristania style but pure Candlemass doom metal with slow, ultra-heavy pounding rhythms and epic clean vocals done by Johan Langqvist. Leif Edling has always been a very fine song writer but it is the older albums that we will always remember Candlemass for. This is without a doubt one of the most impressive debut albums ever released.
