REVIEW: Candlemass - Nightfall Active Records, 1987
9.5/10
Candlemass - Nightfall - cover art There are few bands who has had such an impact on the metal scene as the Swedes of Candlemass. In the late 80s they were one of the creators of the new doom metal sound together with a trio of unforgettable British bands that I don´t need to mention. Without one single tiny trace of doubt this is one of the best metal albums ever made and today, 14 years later, there are not many doom bands in the same division. Candlemass of today has lost some of the initial creativity and energy although they are still highly listenable. What makes them one of the really big names is their ability to create slow driving rhythms without the result being boring. It is heavy, slow, brooding and melancholic just like doom metal is supposed to be. The second important asset of the band is the amazing vocalist Messiah Marcolin who is a trained opera singer. He has one of the absolute best voices in the metal world: it´s powerful, dynamic and enigmatic. When he left the band for Memento Mori they lost a very important part of the band´s inner soul. If you don´t already have this album there is no reason to wait another second. Just go get it.
