Candlemass is not the
only band to feature the powerful vocals of the charismatic Messiah Marcolin
but they are definitely the best one. More than ten years have passed since
the release of this album but it still remains one of my absolute favorites.
While bands like My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost and Anathema were forming their
own brand of doom metal on the British isles, Sweden's very own Candlemass
went in another direction of epic metal based on classic heavy metal á la
Black Sabbath. Their music is heavy and majestic and "Tales Of Creation" is
perhaps their heaviest and most powerful release of all. The band had always
wanted to do a concept album about the creation of life on Earth, out of the
religious aspect that is, and now they took their chance. This is a very
ambitious album but it never fails to deliver and all the way from the very
first thundering track we are taken on a brave musical journey not be
forgotten easily. Leif Edling was always a talented song writer and even
though his later works are less impressive he and his band mates of Candlemass
will always be part of an important chapter in the history of metal. To me
"Tales Of Creation" is the highlight in the band's career but all of their
first four releases are masterpieces well worth looking into if you enjoy
metal in any form.
