REVIEW: Capharnaum - Fractured Willowtip Records, 2004
8/10
Capharnaum - Fractured - cover art As soon as I hit "play" I recognized Matt Heafy's voice, he of Trivium fame and seemingly Roadrunner's latest savior. "Curious," I thought. Looking through the liner notes, my ears proved correct. Also in the band is one Mike Poggione, bassist of Monstrosity, and Daniel Mongrain, guitarist from Martyr and Gorguts. Rounding out the band are the Suecof brothers, Jason (also from Crotch Duster) and Jordan, on guitars/vocals and drums, respectively. They actually founded the band with different members, though this "All Star" line up probably suited them just fine. This is a pretty ferocious blend of Technical Death Metal in the vein of Death that also recalls the mighty Cynic and Suffocation at (different) times. Sometimes it seems as if wankery abounds, like on the last track, but this is simply a very talented group of musicians enjoying their craft. Fractured is a high quality record, if a bit brief at just under 30 minutes, that will bang heads who are into more technically proficient Metal. In case anyone is keeping track, according to Catholic tradition Capharnaum became the home of Jesus once He was repelled by the Nazarenes, though Jason says it means "a place in constant confusion all the time." Oh, and wunderkind Matt Heafy was only 14 and 17 when he wrote his lyrics for this record. Impressive, no? Like this record, actually, that's a "yes." [Good luck tracking this one down as Willowtip's site shows it as unavailable -- perhaps this is due to some of the members being in other bands and lacking label permission. Try Earache's store.]
