REVIEW: Car Bomb - Car Bomb Self-financed, 2004
4.5/10
Car Bomb - Car Bomb - cover art Compared to the Dillinger Escape Plan, Meshuggah, and Converge; makes you expect a lot from Car Bomb. They definitely fit into that combination of bands. . . . but from the three songs offered on this EP, I have a real hard time getting into their chaotic sound. I just don’t like the way they deliver the “start/stop, start/stop” or “math-metal”. It doesn’t hit me the way I think they want it to. The lead screamer has a cool raspy voice overall, but then the melodic clean vocals kill the momentum of their third track “Solid Grey”. At times when they are thrashing, and gathering some speed, I can get into what they are doing. I especially like the distortion used during “His Eyes”. But I’m left thinking that they’re trying too hard at being a band that they’re not, or they're not delivering their full potential. The opening track “Rid” does trick you into thinking that they have something inspired coming at you. Then “His Eyes” starts off very promising crushing out the riffs, and the whispered vocals are a great addition to the song, but then the chugga chugga riffing and no rhythm sucks out anything that I enjoyed from this song. By the end of the song though I’m brought back in because “His Eyes” does drill you with some manic noise that could launch this band into recognition if they were to produce a sound that describes them, and not other bands.
