REVIEW: Carcass - Choice Cuts Earache Records, 2004
9.5/10
Carcass - Choice Cuts - cover art When Carcass formed in Liverpool, England, back in 1985 few could imagine what an important milestone in the history of extreme metal this band would turn out to be. Unfortunately this close to legendary band was only able to release five full-length albums before disbanding ten years later. One can ask the question how meaningful a compilation album like this is for such a band as Carcass but this one actually contains eight hard to find bonus tracks from the band's Peel sessions in 1989 and 1990. On "Choice Cuts" all five albums are represented, from their pioneering grindcore works "Reek Of Putrefaction" and "Symphonies Of Sickness" to the slightly more commercial albums "Heartwork" and "Swansong". Many a band have followed in the footsteps of Carcass but very few have succeeded and none have surpassed the forefathers of grinding death metal. These British citizens were unique back then and they still hold up amazingly well against all competition. They did not only re-invent extreme metal but they also re-invented themselves with each new album. Carcass were a remarkable band and they will be remembered forever, not because of their gory lyrics but because they helped create a whole new sound in metal which is revered to this date by thousands of musicians from all over the world. "Choice Cuts" is part of a larger Earache campaign as the label will be re-releasing highlights from the Carcass catalogue in June, fully remastered and repackaged. Those of you younger metal fans who do not know this band very well yet might begin your investigation with this collection of tracks as they represent all chapters in the band's career. It is an essential part of the history of metal and fans would want to complete their Carcass catalogue with this album, if only for the Peel session tracks which unfortunately suffer a lot from the bad sound. This is nonetheless some of the most complete and exquisite music ever made, period.
