Have you ever hoped to get something serious from a group of obviously socially deranged artists? I myself never thought Carpathian Forest will be presented as mature and serious musicians, as they are with Defending the Throne. That’s because their previous works all carried unique mark of strong anti-social, anti-christian, acoustically and visually bizarre creation. Now they obviously have grown up and created very serious and compact album. Still, CF haven’t lost their own touch of insanity, or morbidness so noticeable on all of their release. It still is what we all love to hear from them, just a bit more enjoyable, if you enjoy bitter medicine. Twelve songs, of which I would underline maybe two: opening ‘It’s darker than you think’ and hymnic, preaching ‘Spill the Blood of the Lamb’. Both of them are great pieces of Metal that easily flow through forbidden lands, taking you with them to journey of no return. Of course, all other songs are good casters of darkness as well. Music on entire album is compact, bizarre mid-tempo mostly Black Metal, but played like no other else plays. Sound remained that same sickness, better produced, though. I am also glad that CF have kept their special spice as well. I am talking about maybe not the most hearable part of music, but definitely atmosphere creating; eerie keyboard background. It took me few listening of their previous recordings to actually understand what’s that creepy thing back there that makes my skin chill. Lyrics are especially strong part of this release. You could call them even intelligent. Surely intriguing they fit great with music. Total mental disease.
