Amongst the Norwegian black metal bands, Carpathian Forest is for sure unique. Their music is a kind of crossover between black metal and grindcore. They have always developed it at this border and their latest release Fuck You All!!!! is no exception. At least, the production of the CD is pretty good so this makes the album really pleasant and easy to listen to. That may help to survive after 45 minutes of this crazy kind of music! We could make a comparaison here with the Finnish metalheads from Impaled Nazarene, even though it's not exactly the same. I'll try to explain why in the following sentences.
Impaled Nazarene makes really insane music and so is everything about this band: I mean the artwork, their backline on stage, the guys themselves... I mean just everything. With Carpathian Forest, you keep the second part about what you'll find besides their music but about the music itself, it can be really common sometimes. Let's consider the first three songs of this album for instance.
At the beginning of the CD, you really get some true black metal, let's say Darkthrone-like, especially for the first song. The next one, "The Frostbitten Woodlands of Norway," as indicated, is also some raw black metal reminding me of some old Diabolical Masquerade material with faster parts however. The beginning of the third one is really in your face as well with a really slappy bass guitar (that you also get on "The First Cut is the Deepest"). And titles start to get more and more fucked up: "Start Up the Incinerator (Here Comes Another Useless Fool)." But after the first chorus, you start to get a really heavy guitar riff that tells you you're at the turn of the CD. "Submit to Satan!!!" is then really different since it's really groovy and not bad ass anymore: you've got something that could be a grindcore track. From there, you will often find some parts that sound either like heavy metal, even like Metallica for instance at the end of "Diabolism (The Seed and the Sower)," or like punk rock. I think my favorite track of the album is "Dypfryst / Dette Er Mitt Helvete." It has a distinctive touch and it's pretty well done. "Everyday I Must Suffer" definitely starts like a rock'n roll Motorhead-like song but with black metal vocals. I think it's the most insane and pointless song of the CD. Here you get a real grindcore spirit... Almost a Gronibard touch actually!
Regarding the drawings on their cover as well, you'll figure out why Carpathian Forest is so... different! I have to say a few words on this cover to show you how meaningless it is, showing different kind of bugs and insects (sometimes a reverse cross kind of tattoed on their back), some diabolic and mystic symbols and also a huge... penis with a condom on it!
As a conclusion, I would say that Carpathian Forest is really a band that doesn't make sense and that's why you will appreciate it!
