REVIEW: Catacomb - We Shall Inherit (EP) Self-financed, 2002
5/10
Catacomb - We Shall Inherit (EP) - cover art The French black / death metal band Catacomb has apparently been around in one form or another since 1990. I can't tell you that much about the band's history, mostly since I don't know French very well, but I can at least tell you a little about what they sound like today. Of the six tracks featured on this demo EP there is not much that sticks out from the rest. We are offered a mix of fairly technical death metal and mid-paced symphonic black metal that does unfortunately not sound very interesting nor very new. A pounding drum machine spoils most of the slow passages and the keyboard arrangements are rather dull and don't do much to enhance the overall impression. To this they have added a row of standard riffs that lack meaning and substance. I don't think that the members of Catacomb are bad musicians but this cd is in need of better song writing. The only thing about Catacomb that is at least a little impressive is the growling vocals which are actually very well done at times. I sincerely hope that this French band will bother to make real songs in the future, otherwise they will find themselves stuck in the French underground for all eternity.
