REVIEW: Catamenia - Eskhata Massacre Records, 2002
7/10
Catamenia - Eskhata - cover art Catamenia is one of the most productive black metal bands in the world at the moment and since their formation in 1995 they have recorded four full-length albums, including this one. Following up last year's "Eternal Winter's Prophecy" these Finnish masters of the black arts have recorded yet another wonderful display of intense, melodic black metal done the way only they can do it. The two opening tracks are excellent examples of what Catamenia sound like at their fast - fast and furious yet melodic and intrigueing. Even though they have gone through several line-up changes during the last couple of years they have been able to maintain their own sound without much disturbance. The drummer Mika Luttinen (Impaled Nazarene) and female keyboarder Heidi Riihinen both decided that the time had come for them to leave the band and therefore this album features Kalmah's very own Janne Kusmin on drums who was kind enough to help them out in the studio. Even though Catamenia is one of the strongest Finnish black metal bands at the moment I would have appreciated this album more if it had had a few less of the slower tunes. The beautiful cover art was done by Thomas Ewerhard. Stand-out tracks: "Storm", Rain Of Blood", "Landscape". Not very original but a high quality release.
