REVIEW: Cataract - Kingdom Metal Blade Records, 2006
8.5/10
Cataract - Kingdom - cover art Switzerland's Cataract deliver an abusive strain of Death Metal influenced Thrash that has been all the rage the last several years, perhaps since The Haunted first reared their heads. About this purported trend, see such bands as Kreator who sound more Death Metal than Thrash on their Enemy of God record, not that I am complaining. There is a distinct Hardcore vibe present on Kingdom, the band's fifth full length release, perhaps mostly in the vocals, although the occasional breakdown also appears. Putting in this crushing slab of punishment and pressing play it only takes a few notes to show the influence of the almighty Slayer. In fact, by the time "On This Graveyard" is unveiled, it sounds like King and Hanneman let these Swiss crazies borrow the riffs to "Angel of Death" -- seriously. Is it any surprise that very Slayer-sounding leads (and riffs) abound on the rest of this album? Probably not. Interestingly enough, song #6 (and later #10) immediately invokes Bolt Thrower -- you know the sound, just pick an album -- and the following track recalls Hatebreed by way of The Haunted. In summary, while originality may suffer a bit the potency and conviction with which Kingdom was executed cannot be denied and to call it Metalcore would be a mistake. If you like such bands as Stampin' Ground, The Haunted, and Slayer, this is for you. Massive.
