REVIEW: Catastrophic - The Cleansing Metal Blade Records, 2001
7/10
Catastrophic - The Cleansing - cover art In 1984 a band called Executioner was formed in the Florida swamps. In 1989 they changed their name to Obituary and released their first album on Roadrunner Records. Being one of the forefathers of the death metal genre they have since then been given the chance to release five more albums and make a name as one of the leading acts of extreme death metal. This is where the Obituary saga ends and another tale begins - that of Catastrophic. This band was formed by Trevor Peres, guitarist and song writer of Obituary, with the other four members being from a band called Pyrexia. With hardcore intensity Catastrophic rages through one track after the other with energetic and aggressive death metal of the most brutal kind but still there is a lot of rhythm and groove that helps lifting this album up on a higher level. A very good album indeed this is, maybe not the best death metal album ever but if you´re into this kind of heavy music you will not be disappointed with the Catastrophic sound. In my opinion Metal Blade has succeeded very well in their "Death Campaign" with several good releases in a short period of time. Just don´t forget to hold on to your head when listening to Catastrophic!
