REVIEW: Cathedral - Carnival Bizarre Earache Records, 1995
8.5/10
Cathedral - Carnival Bizarre - cover art Cathedral has never been one of my favorite bands but they have nevertheless created some very nice music over the year. The first time I heard this band was when I saw the video of "Hopkins (The Witchfinder General)" on MTV some years ago. Yes, you didn't read wrong, back then MTV actually played bands like Cathedral and At The Gates before submitting to the trends completely. If you don't know of these British veterans before this is the album to start out with because it features some of the best work from the band so far. Tracks like "Hopkins", "Utopian Blaster" and "Carnival Bizarre" are bound to make every true fan of metal jump up and down from joy. These are some of the grooviest songs Cathedral have made and this album clearly shows their Black Sabbath worship. They even managed to have Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi to play on the track "Utopian Blaster" which is reason enough to buy this album for many of you I guess. Cathedral is where doom metal began its journey towards the stoner rock which has become so popular today. If not for its place in the history of metal so buy this record because of the beautiful music from one of the ancient ones.
