REVIEW: Cathedral - Endtyme Earache Records, 2001
7/10
Cathedral - Endtyme - cover art Cathedral´s last effort "Caravan Beyond Redemption" was a big disappointment to me but with their new release they have found their way back to my heart. Not only have they created good listenable music again but the quartet has also taken a trip back to their somber doom days. Slow and heavy riffs bring back the good old Cathedral sound although the very important playfulness is still there. The sound is perhaps a little harsher than before but they have without a doubt improved on the last album. The production is very interesting and makes it sound like an album from the early eighties (anyone knows Black Sabbath?) but still the sound quality is great. Even though the slow doom riffs are in majority there are also faster and more aggressive passages and altogether the tempo is more varied than it was on their debut album. The productions and the vocal sound is really great but I still wish for more from a band like Cathedral. The music is good but apart from the amazing "Whores To Oblivion" and the very nice "Ultra Earth" the songs are not fishing for grammy awards. The album was produced by Billy Anderson (Sleep, Orange Goblin).
