The Coventry based slow-motion merchants Cathedral begins their co-operation with Germany's Nuclear Blast by releasing their 8th studio album "The Garden Of Unearthly Delights". I have to be honest and admit that I do not think the English veterans will ever be able to top their landmark release "The Carnival Bizarre" (1995) but both "Endtyme" (2001) and "The VIIth Coming" (2003) were solid albums that lead up to where we are now. Killer new songs such as "North Berwick Witch Trials" and "Corpsecycle" with their unresistable hooks and unmistakable vocals from Mr. Dorrian himself make sure that no fan will feel let down. Especially the former one make memories return of Cathedral's ten years old 'big' hit song "Hopkins (The Witchfinder General)". Most of the songs off the new album carry the classic Cathedral mark of doom-laden 70s influenced sludge rock / metal with a psychedelic vibe. Aside from the two previously mentioned tracks there is another one that sticks out from the crowd. "The Garden" is a 20 minutes long song that features both female vocals and violin, showing a slightly more experimental side to the band than what we are used to hear but still not sounding like anyone else but Cathedral. A fresh start might be what the band needs right now and "The Garden Of Unearthly Delights" is in my opinion their best effort since "The Carnival Bizarre".
