Whether you believe it or not it takes remarkable skills to be able to make slow music sound interesting and one of the bands who have been most successful in this field is doubtless the British hippie doomsters Cathedral. With one leg firmly in the ground laid by Black Sabbath in the 70s and the other leg on a steady path towards the future Lee Dorrian and Gaz Jennings created a musical vehicle that would transport them into places where no man had ever been before. Their brand of fast paced stoner doom metal and Dorrian's characteristic rough edged vocals will surely be remembered forever and has a given place in the history of metal. Having been faithful to their old record company Earache Records for a decade they decided to move on as the band entered the 21st century. To celebrate the band their former label now releases this double album which features many classic Cathedral songs such as "Hopkins (Witchfinder General" and "Autumn Twilight" on the first disc and a rare collection of demo, live and special recordings on a second disc. All twelve tracks except for one ("Schizoid Puppeteer") on the second disc have not been released before and therefore this is somewhat of a must-have not only for the true Cathedral fan but also for metal collectors. This is simply put ultra-heavy doom metal which will hit you hard. Cathedral will always have a special place in my heart and I hope that every new fan to metal learn a thing or two about the past by picking up these two discs.
