What we have here is a Denver based 3-piece band of Grind addicts steeped in Crust and Punk with some Sludge and Thrash influences, too. Sounds like a geographically changed Napalm Death with fewer members, you say? Well, kinda. The largest difference is that Catheter refuse to get political and in that measure do they infinitely succeed where their forebears in ND can fall flat. That is to say, not everyone wants to get into a socio-political disourse when they listen to Grindcore. I certainly don't. Sometimes the music alone really does the talking and people only want to whip their necks and heads into a fury. Like me.
Catheter has largely flown under the radar for several years but this is their sophomore release. Here's to Selfmadegod Records getting out the word and landing this band on the map. This album should certainly garner lots of attention, particularly to the Grind-starved sickos out there. If you're a Metalhead who thinks of shrubbery (or female genitalia [or anything but the U.S. President]) when people mention "bush" this could be for you. If Exhumed is too clean and snazzy for you, get to Dimension 303 ASAP. If you think Necrophagia is too "pop" and Dan Lilker's bass tone is godly, this is definitely for you.
Bonus rounds: The instantly old school artwork and band logo are killer, as is the band itself, really. "Miserable Existence" recalls Entombed's mighty "Hellraiser" in the first ~half, with its slow riffing and sound effects. It is worth noting that the second half of the album intersperses the Grind with ample amounts of Sludge to great effect. The strongest songs include the previously mentioned one, the title track, "Waste Time," "Long Live the Circle Pit" with its great leads, and "Left for Dead." "Outro" is a slow, instrumental crusher that would not have sounded out of place on a Down album. Hail the "Sweet Leaf." Black Sabbath's influence is in Grind, too.
