REVIEW: Cattle Decapitation - Humanure Metal Blade Records, 2004
7.5/10
Cattle Decapitation - Humanure - cover art Cattle Decapitation returns again with enough carnage, chaos and fury to pummel even the most decrepit eardrums. While I can't say that this is the most melodic album I've ever heard, I can say that it's certainly one of the more angry and aggressive albums I've listened to recently. The non-stop tremolo guitar picking and similarly relentless blast beats can grow a little tiresome near the end of the album, but fortunately the album will keep your attention with quick stops and appropriately placed syncopation. I have to say straight up that this title is absolutely hilarious. I don't think I could have imagined a more appropriate or amusing title for a band looking to spread a very firm vegetarian message. The gore-oriented lyrics in general are very reminiscent of one of my personal favorite bands, Carcass as well, which is fine with me as far as I'm concerned. All that being said, on to the specifics!

"Humanure" is an album that should receive praise for its unrelenting brutality, but at the same time I think that it's hard not to comment on the general similarity between the different tracks on the album. "Cloacula" is certainly one of the better, about a minute in there is an insanely strained vocal run that I can't help but commend. I love the blazing riffs followed by the overwhelming dissonance of a held diminished cord and it's hard not to appreciate the drastic contrast above the nonstop blast beats. "Chummified" is an equally interesting track with an almost downright thrashy riff on the guitar during the bridge section and a killer verse later on that really gets the head banging. To break the album down, the first few songs (ironically including the title track) are really not that great, and midway the qualtiy seems to be significantly better. Near the end, the quality doesn't really decrease so much as the listener's interest does. I'm assuming that most people will feel like I did, a little bored by the repetitive feel of the whole album. The band was wise to keep the album to the length that they did because if they had gone on much longer, I think there would be more serious complaints. This is not meant to sound like the music is bad and that I couldn't wait for it to stop, but rather I'm trying to say that, to me at least, the relentless style of the band is only novel for so long.

To avoid further complications, I'll sum it up with the following. I really do like this album and think that it isn't one to be overlooked. There are no less, obvious draw backs that can't be ignored. If you like your metal to have a good amount of melody in it, you've come knocking on the ass-wrong door. If you want your mind to be blown by intense vocals, disgusting lyrics, high-speeds and loads of tremolo / blast beat riffs, this is going to be one of the best albums you've ever heard.
