REVIEW: Cave Canem! - Inter Bella self-released, 2008
7.5/10
Cave Canem! - Inter Bella - cover art Well, isn’t this a major improvement! Cave Canem! (which, of course, translates as “beware of the dog,” replete with the de facto exclamation mark) hails from Russia and plays a quirky, proggy, groove-laden variation on technical death metal. It was pretty excellent on the first record, but since that was recorded sporadically between 2001 and 2004 in presumably the direst studio conditions, it was so poor-sounding as to be rather unlistenable. This follow-up isn’t perfect by any means, but it sounds much crisper. The sound is still a bizarre pleasure, with more industrial scrapes, overlapped and ranted Latin vocals and a can’t-sit-still dynamic restlessness. My only major criticism pertains to song lengths. Whereas many bands don’t know when to reel it in, Cave Canem!’s Achilles heel is that of underlength. These songs are good enough to be more fleshed out, rather than coming off as the two-minute vignettes they seem to be. Something to consider, fellas. As things stand, this is a fine little wackjob entity, perfect for fans of Thought Industry, Mekong Delta and Devin Townsend flotsam.
