REVIEW: Cayne - Old Faded Pictures Scarlet Records, 2001
4.5/10
Cayne - Old Faded Pictures - cover art The Italian label Scarlet Records have grown to become a very respectable metal label but this time they really disappointed me. Cayne consist of a couple of former Lacuna Coil members (Claudio Leo and Raffaele Zagaria) and they also sound pretty much like they would if they were left without the beautiful female vocals - a complete mess of boring guitar melodies and weak male vocals. The music is still listenable but there is something missing - an edge, some nice songs that lift the album, a great vocalist - just anything to make the album more than one coherent grey lump. Songs like "Latent Spirits" and "Slightlu Melody" show an ounce of potential for the band but it is unfortunately not enough for me to be impressed. If you like melancholic rock like modern day Moonspell, Lacuna Coil, H.I.M. and other such bands you might be able to enjoy Cayne as well but you should know that all the bands I mentioned are playing in a different league than Cayne. To use In Flames linguistics: "Insipid 2001". This album works as background music but nothing more, at least not for me. By the way, "Old Faded Pictures" is a very appropriate title on this album...
