REVIEW: Celestial Ode - Celestial Ode (EP) Self-financed, 2001
7/10
Celestial Ode - Celestial Ode (EP) - cover art Celestial Ode is a band from Athens, Greece, that formed back in 1996 by the guitarist Themis Gourlis. Today they are a three-piece ready to record their first full-length album I think. This demo EP was recorded in January 2001 and, unlike most other demos, it doesn't really suffer from bad production although it is of course not perfect. Money does a lot these days and if you don't have the support of a bigger label it is impossible, or at least extremely expensive, to get a flawless result. There is no doubt that Celestial Ode have been musically inspired by Judas Priest but there are also touches of Iron Maiden and old thrash metal classics like Testament and Anthrax. These guys are actually excellent musicians and they have come up with some nice riffs and melodies that makes you want to return to the golden age of heavy metal. The vocalist will however create some problems for them, at least that is my impression. He sounds like a high-pitched version of Geoff Tate, the Queensrÿche vocalist, but without the same depth in the voice. Some people will probably find his vocals to be a little annoying but I think he is doing a good job though and Celestial Ode is one of the best Greek bands I've heard in a while.
