REVIEW: Celtic Frost - Cold Lake Noise Records, 1988
2/10
Celtic Frost - Cold Lake - cover art Strangely enough, some people still think that this is not a bad album. Well, I don´t belong to those: I firmly believe it´s a huge piece of rubbish. I just can state I´ve got many reasons to support my negative opinion. Look, on the first hand, one detail: when some years ago the Celtic Frost catalogue was re-released and fortunately remastered, one album was intentionally ignored, and that was, yes, you guessed, “Cold lake”. Another point: legendary frontman Thomas Gabriel Fischer (a.k.a. Warrior in the metal circles), in his “Are you morbid?” book (a nice and entertaining read, by the way), dedicates some unpleasant words to this LP, trying –unsuccessfully...!- to justify why Celtic Frost recorded such an awful album. To complete the whole thing, add the simple and dull cover art and the glammish look of the band members,; in fact, it´s a funny and, at the same time, pathetic experience to spot Tom G. Warrior resembling a Ratt tribute band´s singer! Argh! Tom himself state things like this: “The negative reviews really rip it [´Cold lake´] apart, so much so that this –together with the album´s inferior material and presentation- hurts our career noticeably. On the other hand are those who are willing to explore anything this crazy band does and who applaud the album. They, too, overdo it, of course, as nice as this is for us. They overrate the album, and so do we, though for marketing reasons. ´Cold lake´ could have been a good album, under different circumstances. But as it stands, it is utter crap.” (Thomas G. Fischer, talking about “Cold lake”, words taken from “Are you morbid? Into the Pandemonium of Celtic Frost”). So embarrasing and shameful is this LP, that the band, in a sensible decision, decided to forget “Cold lake” and bury it several feets under. History is full of albums that people reject and the bands defend, but this case is quite explanatory. “Cold lake” can´t be taken seriously nor be compared with great albums as “Morbid Tales” or “To Mega Therion”. Silly vocals, dull melodies, ottal absence of feeling, everything´s wrong. Listening to cheap, soft and weak songs as “(Once) they were eagles” or “Dance sleazy” we can´t recognize the grandiosity of Celtic Frost anywhere. Maybe one or two tracks could be saved from the bonfire, but those aren´t songs that fit in the style of the band at all. Perhaps in a third class act, but not in Celtic Frost, definitely. Yes, “Downtown Hanoi” is more or less acceptable, if I had to name a track, but one thing is clear: this is a horrible album that the own band denies... I bought the LP for only 6 €, and just to complete the collection. And many people did like me, I presume...
